I was just watching a recent MTV interview with Robert Pattinson (shut up) when he mentioned that his beloved co-star, Tai in “Water for Elephants“, was the same elephant at Banksy’s Barely Legal show in Los Angeles a few years back. I was one of many who waited in line for hours, in east L.A., in the hot, HOT heat, to see this show. Summer of 2006, remember that? When temps were at 120 easy. Don’t agree with painting the poor animal, but she was luckily paint-free at the time of my visit.

Wow, was this already almost 5 years ago?? Time is flying away.

My goal for 2011 was to find inspiration daily: for myself, for my work, for everything else I do. I think I’ve been doing a good job of that so far. (See variations of such attempts on Tumblr, Pinterest, and the new blog.)

Another goal I had was to still post about things that I’ve managed to fall in love with while I am living outside of Los Angeles. A long-distance guide to living, loving, making and shopping in L.A., if you will. I am only remembering this now, here in oppressively gray Washington, while I am looking at the softly sun-bleached downtown L.A. goodness in the photographs of Carmen Chan. Shot on film! Be still my heart.

Fashion + Sense at LACMA’s Resnick Pavilion

Have you guys checked out the new Resnick Pavilion at LACMA yet? I was there last weekend during the Art Walk, and I have to say this is probably my favorite part of the museum. LACMA in general is just straight West Coast respresentin’. I was blown away with the museums in New York, but after most recent visit to LACMA, it’s clear that LA’s bringing it in our own way. The artwork there just has so much room to b r e a t h e .

I loved the milky lighting and artfully contemporary but respectful way that the paintings and sculptures were displayed in the Eye for the Sensual exhibition.

Fashioning Fashion was probably the least stuffy fashion exhibition I’ve yet to see in a museum, but the quality and information was not compromised in the least. High marks in the originality and organization department, and it looks like this is the direction that LACMA is moving in. And do I even need to mention how intricately beautiful the garments were?

Both exhibitions just opened up earlier this month, and yes you can take pictures! Or at least we were given permission to at the time.

Diana World Tour at Lomo LA

My wallet doesn’t permit me to shoot and experiment with film photography and all my Lomo cameras as much as I’d like, so I’ll be going to the Lomography LA events as much as possible to indulge in the talents of those who regularly do. (Thx to Kate for inviting me, and Hi!) Last week was the opening party of the Diana World Tour. Cruising Together

Meet my twinsy. While I usually flounder and on a rare occasion smolder, she sizzles and sparkles. In life, and on camera. I was hoping some of her photogenic-ness would rub off on me, and I think it did. I’m super happy with the way these photos turned out. My main inspirations for this were the Miss Dior Cherie ads, this Steven Alan dress, and Blair and Serena’s “Beautiful Girls” clip from Gossip Girl.

Thanks to BF and Yvonne for their photographic and photogenic talents. And Downtown Los Angeles as a beautiful backdrop – you look good on camera, always.

Type Life

I just got back from the opening night of TypeCon, a conference on yes, type, which is taking place here in L.A. this year. It featured an hour-long documentary on a man who made and cut letters for a living, from sketching them out on paper to carving them in miniature form on metal blocks, and I didn’t ADD once from the screen. That’s how much you know I love this shit.

All this letter talk makes me remember that awesome alphabet print from Vena Cava Spring 2008 – seriously wishing I had that to wear right now.

Downtown Discovery: World of Color

When our studio was researching businesses around downtown to work with, we discovered that the Disney Concert Hall was designed by Gehry to be able to project video images onto the swooping planes. To my dismay this idea never came to fruition, at least not to my knowledge, until recently when the Disney World of Color tour came our way. The show didn’t blow me away, but it still made me happy to see the Concert Hall finally being utilized the way it was intended.
